Rainy Week Takes a Toll on Baltimore Structures

Maryland Virginia and D.C. saw plenty of rain this past week, some of it reaching record-setting totals. More than 4 inches of rain fell across the region from Monday through Wednesday, with many areas seeing even higher totals. At BWI airport, 3.06 inches of rain fell on Wednesday, which tied a record for single-day rain totals set way back in 1947, and single-day totals were broken at Reagan and Dulles airports on Wednesday as well. The rainy week brought rainfall totals for Baltimore up to 8.6 inches for the month of April, narrowly missing the record of 8.7 inches set more than 100 years ago in 1889. According to the Baltimore Sun, “Baltimore is off to one of its wettest starts to any year, with 20.27 inches of precipitation since January the most since 1998.”

The heavy rainfall brought with it flash flooding that damaged many structures in low-lying areas. In Baltimore, a retaining wall on 26th street in Charles Village gave way, sending the sidewalk, cars, and a good portion of the road onto the train tracks below. The road is closed while the DOT and Public Works stabilize the area, but 26th street residents may not be able to return to their homes for more than a month while work is completed.

The effects of the rain and flooding on the region’s structures highlight the need for building repair and restoration, as well as preventative measures such as waterproofing. While you can never tell what the weather may bring, you can count on Consolidated Coatings for quality building restoration and repair. If your commercial or industrial structure was damaged by the recent heavy rain in Maryland, Virginia, and D.C., we offer a number of services such as concrete and masonry repair, to restore structural integrity to your building. Waterproofing prevents the extensive damage water can cause in the event of future flooding. We also offer cosmetic building work such as professional painting for commercial and industrial structures. So now that the rain is gone, it’s time to get to work on repairing and restoring your building with Consolidated Coatings.
